Children in Divorce: 2013

  • Almost half (48%) of couples divorcing in 2013 had at least 1 child aged under 16 living in the family.
  • There were 94,864 children aged under 16 who were in families where the parents divorced in 2013, a decrease of 38% from 2003 when there were 153,088 children.
  • Over a fifth (21%) of children in 2013 were under 5 and 64% were under 11.
  • In 2013 there was an average of 1.71 children aged under 16 per divorcing couple with 1 or more children aged under 16.
  • These changes may reflect the increasing proportion of children born to cohabiting, rather than married couples.
  • 42% of marriages in England & Wales end in divorce
  • 95% of separating couples head off to the Family Courts
  • Britain has the highest divorce rate in the EU. The number of divorces throughout the EU is increasing, with an average of 1.8 divorces for every 1,000 people.
